Ward 7's East End Market

For the second time since its inception, BATAX was proud to be included in September’s Ward 7’s East End Market at Marvin Gaye Park. Visitors to the market were treated to a symphony of the senses: the smell of mouth-watering global cuisine, bright flowers and fresh produce stacked in colorful piles, the hum of happy voices woven together with a hip-hop beat, all while the late summer sun drenched the bustling park. Featuring a rainbow of vendors, this market isn’t just beautiful, it’s doing a lot of good.

Started as a neighbor-supported effort in September of 2021, the East End Market is a space to showcase local vendors and distribute free groceries to families in need. This past winter season alone, EEM partnered with various community organizations to provide food for over 1,000 families. Over the past year, the market has featured an array of opportunities for community engagement, including an indoor gardening workshop by Cultivate the City, yoga classes by Sacred Vessel, free bike repairs courtesy of The Bike House, and a kids zone, sponsored by Urban Outreach, complete with dj and free hotdogs.

These markets supply tangible help to area residents and serve as an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange, providing partnership opportunities, and showcasing this beautiful part of the District and its diverse community.

Each market costs EEM approximately $2,600 (not including capital costs or food distribution funds), and these efforts are made possible by the work of volunteers. Think you can help?

From the beginning, the market has aimed to build community wealth, revitalize the area, and connect residents with resources.  BATAX believes in the spirit of community and supporting others, and takes great pride knowing we could be a part of this exciting ongoing event!
